The best curly hair products for humid weather
So the past couple of years I’ve travelled abroad quite a bit, and I always worry about what hair products I’m going to bring, the size of them – if my excessive product hauling self can go away with just one staple products, if they’ll have a diffuser to dry my hair successfully, even what will actually work for my curls in all these different weather conditions?! A lot to think about!!
After spending a week in Costa Rica in 2017 my hair struggled a lot as the humid rainy season along with tropical jungle climates did not do my curls any favours. Before my trip I didn’t really think ahead and just threw 3 products into my suitcase hoping for the best, it was not the best.
The next trips I decided I needed to prepare myself a little better, and after 2 weeks in Bali in 2017 and then 2 weeks in Thailand this year I seem to have upped my hair travelling game. Although the sizes of the products and trying to figure out what would work best for defined curls in these sandy and salty conditions it still proved a bit difficult. If anybody knows where I can get travel sized curly hair products, please do let me know!
I’ve put together a list of products that have really helped my hair recover from UV, humidity, dry weather as well as the sandy, salty conditions and hopefully this can help you out on your travels too.
This product is a bit of a life saver when it comes to travelling and needing a shampoo and conditioning product all in one. The bottle isn’t particularly big and it does two jobs in one which is perfect for saving that all important suitcase space. Big Hair + Beauty CURL Defining Cremé Gel
The Big Hair & Beauty CURL Defining Cremé Gel is perfect for warm and humid temperatures. And also really great when you need to bring minimal products with you. The creme gel looks like a cream but acts like a gel without giving too much of a stiff hold or crunch or any build up. The cream is similar to any normal styling lotion but the gel helps to hold your curls and leave them defined with a light-medium hold.
Curl Keeper Original
I’m a big fan of Curl Keeper products and this little gem is the most perfect creation for defined curls in humidity. The liquid is really thin and water-based so it may fool you but actually works really well. The product creates a sort of cast on your curls when applied to wet hair which then shouldn’t be touched until fully dry, the cast then sort of breaks without any humidity penetrating. The only downfall of the product is that it can build up quite a bit but if it’s used sparingly and on a temporary basis in between washes it is amazing.
As I am curl jelly
This jelly is probably better for quite thick hair, it holds and defines curls and gives a moisture boots while offering moisture boosters that help fight the frizz caused by the weather.
Shea Moisture JBCO Styling Lotion
This styling lotion is a good top for day 2/3 curls that just need a little bit of a boost and moisture without any build up. The styling lotion is made from my amazing natural products really refreshing for curls like castor oil and apple cider vinegar.
Aloe Vera gel
Aloe vera gel comes in super handy whilst travelling, not only good for sunburn or as an after sun treatment it also is amazing for hydrating and defining curls. I scrunched a bit of the gel into my hair after applying my daily styling product and it seemed to help keep the frizz at bay.
If all else fails or you don't have the right products with you you can't go wrong with a high or low bun or braided hair to avoid any hair stresses!
