Chicago style deep dish pizza has FINALLY come to London, and Japes lives up to all of the expectations whilst keeping to its chic & swanky London style.

I remember distant memories of younger me having my birthdays at Chicago Pizza Pie Factory in Hanover Sq, they shut down YEARS ago! I must’ve been about 5 or 6 and still have memories of those deep pan Chicago pizzas, so I’m happy our pizza prayers have finally been answered and the nostalgia is on pause for now!

Japes is in the perfect location, Dean St, Soho, close to Oxford Circus and Tottenham Court Road station and what seemed to have started off as a sweet/savoury crepe and waffle house has now been expanded by putting pizza on the menu. The interiors are super homely and chic, with velvety chairs, funky light bulbs and the odd greenery, it’s not particularly big (so I recommend booking) but all-in-all a pretty cool atmosphere.

They have a small bar that serves their delicious signature cocktails as well as other alcoholic drinks and hard shakes. I recommend a Paloma or Japes Fizz. Or how can you say no to a Espresso Martini made with chocolate ice-cream, vodka and coffee liqueur?! So much selection. For the non-drinkers they have loads of milkshakes too.

The main event of course if their Deep Dish Pizza’s and Pizza Pot Pies! The menu is quite short and concise but pretty much packs a punch and delivers everything you would want from a pizza. Veggie or meaty, the thing they all have in common is CHEESE! Let’s be honest, if you don’t love cheese or don’t always go for extra cheese on your pizza then this review isn’t for you. Japes is all about the extra cheese without needing to order it. Mind readers!

We went for the Basic (vegetarian) - Tomato sauce, mozzarella, fresh basil, olive oil; Chicago - Pepperoni, mozzarella, parmesan, tomato sauce; Carbonara - Pancetta, garlic, mozzarella, parmesan; and Beeftaker pizza pot pie - Slow-cooked beef ragu, mushrooms, mozzarella.

They come in Normal and XXL and are so reasonably priced, between £6-10 for the normal and £12-20 for the XXL. The normal is definitely enough for 1 if you’re hungry or 2 to share, then you can mix and match.  They all stood out and I don’t even think I could pick a favourite, the Carbonara flavours definitely gave me all of the pasta vibes, and each dish is complete with generous lashings of stringy cheese *cue cheese pull IG photo* and a soft and doughy base. I think Japes have won the deep pan pizza crown.

If you have room for dessert (personally I didn’t but will be going back for) there’s a fully indulgent crepe and waffle menu, which are all home-made along with their ice-cream.

The only dilemma here is whether to order pizza, crepes, waffles or to just get all 3!

I’ve seen Japes pop up on the Nez app too, so you can grab an extra discount on there. Use my referral code 2ITR and collect 125 points! https://nez.app.link/rSbQMhqmtT
